An iconic stipulation has been added to one of the major matches at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, appropriately announced by a Hall of Famer on last night’s episode.
The Cruiserweight Championship unification match between Jordan Devlin and Santos Escobar will now be a ladder match, as confirmed by one of the originators of the match, Shawn Michaels.
He appeared on NXT to literally raise the belts above the ring to signify that the undisputed Cruiserweight champion will be decided by climbing the ladder and unhooking both belts at TakeOver.
The first ever ladder match broadcast in WWE came about in similar circumstances. In late 1993, Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels was stripped of the belt after taking a sabbatical from the company. In his stead, Razor Ramon won the vacant title to be recognised as the new champion. Coming in to WrestleMania X in 1994, Shawn Michaels returned to the company brandishing his own title belt and declaring that he remained the true champion. WWE management decided to hoist both belts above the ring at Madison Square Garden for the competitors to climb the ladder to snare and become the new champion.
The match has gone down in history as an all time classic and now these two NXT competitors will hope to follow in HBK and Ramon’s footsteps as they battle to unify their titles.
NXT TakeOver: Stand And Deliver will take place over two nights on 7th and 8th April 2021. This match will take place on night two of the event and will air exclusive on the WWE Network internationally and Peacock in the USA.
