WWE yesterday teased a major announcement would take place on that evening’s NXT show. During the broadcast, the D-Generation X team of Triple H and Shawn Michaels showed up to let the world know that the next NXT Takeover event would take place on June 7th and it would be bringing back the fondly remembered In Your House branding.

2020 marks the 25th anniversary of In Your House events. These shows were a staple of the mid 90s wrestling scene. Looking to match WCW’s aggressive expansion in their number of PPVs that year, WWE created the In Your House brand as a cut-price, shorter-run-time, B-level PPV show that would air in months that didn’t include a then ‘Big Five’ PPV.

The first IYH took place in May 1995 and saw World champion Diesel defend his belt against Sycho Sid. In time, the In Your House shows evolved into full 3-hour PPVs and took on subtitles including some that became long-term PPV brands of their own including No Way Out, Unforgiven and Judgment Day.

Whilst they may have started as lesser shows, In Your House has played host to some absolutely landmark matches and moments over the years including the first Hell In A Cell match between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at In Your House: Badd Blood in 1997. That match is one many believe to be the greatest WWE match of all time.

The final event under the In Your House umbrella was St Valentines Day Massacre on February 14th 1999 (funnily enough), which featured a steel cage main event between ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and Vince McMahon as well as the debut of The Big Show.

With it being the 25th anniversary and many fans never spending more time in their house until these last few weeks, it is a brilliant time for WWE to revive the brand and bring a nostalgic smile to the faces of fans old enough to remember the original events. And if you’re not old enough, it is well worth seeking out some of them on the WWE Network. There are some absolute crackers in there.

NXT Takeover: In Your House will take place at the WWE Performance Center next month.
