Despite rumours for a long time that Becky Lynch was ready for a WWE return, the way she did so at SummerSlam shocked many.
‘The Man’ walked away with the SmackDown Women’s Championship, taking the belt from Bianca Belair in a match which lasted just 27 seconds.
The last match for Lynch before this had been at WrestleMania 36, where she defeated Shayna Baszler to keep hold of the Raw Women’s Championship. Later in the year, at the Raw after Money In The Bank 2020, Lynch relinquished the title to briefcase holder Asuka and announced her pregnancy.
Lynch gave birth to her daughter in December 2020, and rumours soon started circulating about how soon she would be back in a WWE ring.
Roll on SummerSlam, and Belair was scheduled to defend her title against Sasha Banks in a WrestleMania 37 rematch. With Banks unable to compete, Carmella was announced as her replacement before Lynch returned and quickly took her out, before becoming SmackDown Women’s Champion for a fourth time.
In a new report, Mike Johnson of PWInsider says the quick match was a decision made by Vince McMahon.
We are told it was 100% a Vince McMahon call and the title switch to Lynch was specifically to make her return even more spectacular. It should be noted that the quick nature of the match (27 seconds) was seen by a number of fans as taking the wind out of the sails of Bianca Belair, but we are told that even though some in the company expressed that concern, the idea was that the moment was about Lynch per Vince McMahon’s vision of the PPV.
This is set to lead to Lynch becoming one of the company’s top heels, with her and Belair set to feud over the gold.
