Kenny Omega Confirms Rules Of Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch at AEW Revolution

Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch

AEW Revolution takes place this weekend and as most will be aware by now, the main event of the show will see Kenny Omega defend his AEW World Championship against Jon Moxley in a Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch.

Via means of a tweet and an amusing hand drawn graphic, Omega has confirmed the rules of the bout.

  • The ring ropes on three sides of the ring will be wrapped in barbed wire.
  • Contact with the barbed wire will ‘trigger’ an explosive on the side of the ring on which contact is made.
  • There will be three ‘Triple Hell’ zones on the floor which are platforms covered in barbed wire and also rigged to explode.
  • All explosives in and around the ring will automatically detonate 30 minutes after the opening bell.

With these rules, AEW seem to be staying fairly true to the gimmick match’s roots in the Japanese FMW promotion in the mid-1990s.

It must be noted that those bouts, featuring the likes of Cactus Jack and Terry Funk, are remembered as much for the ridiculousness of the set up as they are for their brutality. Hopefully AEW has planned the match in such a way that it can be taken far more seriously than its predecessors.
