AEW Champion Kenny Omega has stepped up to the plate when it comes to a war of words with WWE, claiming that the reason they are bringing back so many former stars is because the company “is desperate”.
AEW Dynamite has managed to regularly bring in more than one million viewers a week on TNT, despite the programme being less than two years old. They’ve also gone up against (and beaten) NXT on Wednesday nights for many weeks before the WWE brand moved to a new slot on Tuesdays.
Many now compare figures for WWE Monday Night Raw and AEW in the key 18-49 demographic, with Tony Khan’s team starting to pick up some wins there as well.
With AEW signing stars such as CM Punk and Bryan Danielson, the AEW Champion feels that WWE is desperate, and this can be seen in them turning to past superstars in an attempt to boost the ratings.
Speaking to Tokyo Sports, Omega said:
At the start, there was a huge gap between WWE and AEW. (AEW) was just some fledgling promotion after all. But have you realized how the tables have turned? WWE is desperate. They keep bringing back legends every other week. COVID is a terrible thing, and we never wanted it to happen but it is what it is.
The most recent of these returns was Brock Lesnar, who came back at SummerSlam and will now challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at Crown Jewel. Other stars who’ve had short runs in recent months are the likes of John Cena and Goldberg.
