New Japan Pro Wrestling’s annual Wrestle Kingdom event takes place in Tokyo on 4th and 5th and one of the big question marks has been over the participation of IWGP Champion Jon Moxley.
Mox, who also holds the AEW World Championship, made regular trips to NJPW before the pandemic hit but hasn’t been seen in the company since February.
Fans had speculated as to whether he would make a return for January’s Tokyo Dome spectacular but according to AEW President Tony Khan, the answer is a firm no.
Khan took part in a media call this week to promote this week’s special Dynamite episode, ‘Winter Is Coming’ featuring the biggest match in AEW’s television history with Moxley defending his AEW Title against Kenny Omega. When asked outright about Mox heading to Japan in January, he simply said no, he would not, without elaborating further.
If we are to take Khan at face value, this leaves the immediate future of the IWGP United States Title in doubt. Having already been vacated by Moxley once due to injury, we could see a situation where it goes a year without being defended. The last defense was in February in Osaka at the New Beginnings event where Mox defended against Minoru Suzuki.
