It was a night of incident on NXT last night. As well as the announcement of NXT Takeover: In Your House next month and the utter brilliance of The Undisputed Era’s Zoom based promo, the headline news was that we have new NXT Tag Team Champions in the shape of Imperium.
Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner defeated Matt Riddle and his stand-in partner Timothy Thatcher after Thatcher left ‘The Original Bro’ to fend for himself. This led to a match between the two in the main event which Riddle won. This issue feels far from over in one way or another.
Thatcher had been teaming with Riddle for a number of weeks when his original Bro-serweights partner Pete Dunne became stuck in his native England due to the COVID-19 travel ban.
It seemed like we were set for another Riddle odd couple tag team with a more straight-laced partner in Thatcher. But when it was announced last week that the duo would defend the titles against Imperium, it felt like this turn/break up might be on the cards.
It promises to be an interesting potential storyline. Riddle and Thatcher have a storied history together elsewhere, with a number of hard-hitting matches against one another.
More interestingly, prior to their time in WWE, Thatcher, Barthel (under his real name Axel Dieter Jr) and WALTER formed a stable in the German promotion WXW named Ringkamp.
This faction was clearly a direct inspiration for Imperium so it will be interesting to see whether Thatcher joins the ranks in NXT. Especially with WALTER himself being, like Dunne, stuck in Europe for the foreseeable future.
