In news that will surprise nobody, Roman Reigns vs. John Cena was confirmed as the main event of SummerSlam on the July 30th episode of SmackDown.
The two have been on an obvious collision course since Cena returned at the Money In The Bank PPV and now the match is official after a typical WWE contract signing went awry on this week’s episode.
Reigns had previously turned down Cena’s challenge and instead extended an invitation to Finn Balor to challenge for the Universal Championship at WWE’s biggest show of the year.
During a contract signing for this match, Balor was attacked by Baron Corbin who attempted to sign the contract himself. He was thwarted by Cena who attacked the former King Corbin and instead signed the name himself to somehow make the match official.
Admittedly it does feel like a rather cheap way to get to such a massive match but it is consistent with Reigns’ character to have to be forced into a defence against a rival on Cena’s level.
SummerSlam takes place on Saturday 21st August and we will be running viewing parties up and down the UK. You can get more information and buy your tickets from this link.
