In the main event of WWE Extreme Rules, Finn Balor looked on the cusp of winning the Universal Championship, when the top rope snapped causing him to fall in to the ring.
Balor got his title opportunity against Roman Reigns after a previous attempt on SmackDown ended when the referee stopped the match. This was also after Balor was set to face ‘The Head Of The Table’ at SummerSlam, but John Cena ended up in the match instead.
For the match at Extreme Rules, Balor underwent a change we hadn’t seen since 2019 when he donned the paint and became ‘The Demon’ to take on Roman Reigns.
During the match it looked like Balor could take the title after his heartbeat sounded on the outside and revived for the former NXT Champion. Heading to the top rope looking for a coupe de grace, the top rope snapped without warning and Balor crashed to the ring as the lighting changed from his signature red and back to the arena lights. A spear from ‘The Tribal Chief’ after this was enough to end the match.
It would seem that the reason for the rope breaking has now been explained, as footage on social media looks to show a cameraman who was on the apron cutting the rope with a knife from the other side of the ring.

With the title retained, Roman Reigns’ next defence looks set to be at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia where he will face ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar, who he had another confrontation with on last night’s episode of SmackDown.
Extreme Rules was a night for title retention, as Becky Lynch also retained the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Bianca Belair following the match being declared a no contest, Charlotte Flair defeated Alex Bliss for the Raw belt, and Damian Priest kept the United States Championship in a triple-threat match against Sheamus and Jeff Hardy.
