Drew Gulak Removed From WWE Roster

Whilst no official word has been forthcoming from WWE, it seems at least for now, former WWE Cruiserweight Champion Drew Gulak has left the company.

It doesn’t seem like this is another release to follow last month’s cull of talent. It seems Gulak’s contract simply expired, as Mike Johnson at PWInsider reports.

This news comes mere hours after Gulak appeared on Smackdown Live in a very nice little match against his on screen training partner Daniel Bryan. Gulak lost the match in the first round of the Intercontinental Championship tournament, made after Sami Zayn was stripped of the title.

If both sides don’t come to a renewed agreement, Gulak will enter the free agent pool at a curious time.

On one hand, after his recent storyline with Bryan and string of good matches on Smackdown and PPV, his stock has never been higher. On the flip side, with the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic bringing chaos and uncertainty to more or less every industry on the planet, wrestling companies will surely be extra cautious with their hiring decisions while it remains uncertain they will remain without a live gate as a revenue stream.

Crucially for Gulak’s immediate future, he is able to appear with any other company with immediate effect. The well known WWE 30 day no-compete cause is not relevant here because this is a contract expiry situation rather than a release mid-contract. One would imagine that once business is back to something like normality, Gulak’s options would be strong. He would seem like a good addition to any one of AEW, ROH, NJPW and others based on both his ring work and strong, serious personality.
