Recently AEW confirmed that they would be hosting a women’s eliminator tournament to crown a new number one contender for the AEW Women’s Championship currently held by Hikaru Shida.
The sixteen berth tournament will begin this month and will see one half of the bracket take place in Japan and consist entirely of Japanese competitors. The other half of the tournament will take place in Jacksonville and consist of AEW regulars.
The names have been announced for the tournament now and the pedigree is impressive.
The Japanese bracket will consist of a number of legendary and newer names from that county with Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki, Veny, Emi Sakura, Ryo Mizunami, Mei Suruga, Rin Kadokura, and Maki Itoh confirmed to take part.
On the U.S side, Serena Deeb, Riho, Britt Baker, Tay Conti, Thunder Rosa, Nyla Rose, Anna Jay, and Leyla Hirsch will compete.
It has already been announced that Riho vs. Serena Deeb will face off in the first match in the USA based portion of the match.
AEW’s last Eliminator tournament saw winner Kenny Omega ultimately defeat Jon Moxley to become the new champion. Will the winner of this tournament find similar success? We will find out soon enough.
