It will go down as one of the most historic moments in professional wrestling, when CM Punk made his AEW debut on Rampage on 20th August.
Punk was visibly moved by the reception he received from the crowd on his first live wrestling appearance in seven years, as he hugged fans and even crowed surfed on his way to the ring in his hometown of Chicago.
After thanking the fans several times, Punk told the 16,000 strong crowd that there was an ice cream waiting for them when they left the arena.
Although when a lot of these sorts of event happen they are publicity stunts, the company who produced the ice creams, Pretty Cool Ice Creams based in Chicago, have confirmed that ‘The Voice Of The Voiceless’ personally paid for them.
Since we have been getting a lot of questions, yes the ice cream was on him – it wasn’t a publicity stunt dreamed up by promoters. He came to us on his own and asked us to help him do this 2 years ago, and finally the moment was right. Our small team worked tirelessly to hand make every bar, and CM Punk wrote the check for the entire bill himself.
Whilst the treats for the crowd were a fun gesture, there was also serious business to attend to. Punk confirmed that he would compete in his first match back at AEW All Out on 5th September and made the challenge to Darby Allin.
This should be the first of many matches for Punk, with AEW President Tony Khan confirming in the media call after the event that this isn’t a short-term deal.
Punk will next appear for AEW on Dynamite on August 25th.
