September 30th 2018.

That was the last time fans in the UK saw one of the standard bearers, Doug Williams, lace up his boots in a UK ring. Fittingly, that milestone took place at Progress Wrestling’s seminal ‘Hello Wembley’ event, the biggest independent card in the UK in the last 20 years.

Now, wrestling fans across the UK are abuzz as today, Williams announced that his self-imposed UK retirement will soon come to an end.

Following the loss to Trent Seven at Wembley Arena, Williams restricted himself to sporadic appearances outside the UK, most recently for Pro Wrestling NOAH in January 2020. With UK promotions starting to announce their return to live events as the COVID-19 pandemic looks to be abating, fans have yet another reason to be excited.

Williams, as long time fans will need no reminding, was one of the pioneers of British Wrestling abroad at the time when the pathways to WWE and other promotions were not so pronounced. As well as time with NOAH, Williams was one of the ‘founding fathers’ of Ring Of Honor in 2002 where he won the Pure Title. He also had a notable run in TNA Wrestling between 2008-2012. Whilst with the company he won the Television and X-Division Championships as well as the Tag Team Championship with fellow Brit and current NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Nick Aldis. His former partner was among a number of well known names to express their joy at Williams’ announcement today.

As part of the extended Hooked On Wrestling team, we are delighted to see Doug back in UK rings and we are certain fans around the country will be equally as excited.
