Following his WWE Championship win, Big E has paid tribute to his long-time friend and often rival, Brodie Lee.
Big E reached the top of the mountain when he won his first WWE Championship on the 13th September edition of Monday Night Raw, effectively utilising his Money In The Bank cash-in.
Bobby Lashley already had a scheduled title defence on the show against Randy Orton. However, the briefcase holder had taken to social media earlier in the day to say he would at Raw to cash in. He continued to taunt ‘The Almighty’ throughout the show, claiming he would take the title one way or the other.
After Lashley successfully defended against Orton, Big E stormed the ring and hit a Big Ending to get the decisive pinfall. His New Day teammates Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods came to the ring to help the new title holder celebrate.
One week later on the 20th September edition of Raw, Big E opened the show along with his New Day partners to discuss the victory. Whilst noting that we hadn’t gotten to Thansgiving yet, he wasn’t going to wait until 25th November to thank those who helped him get to this point.
In a heartfelt message, Big E made a point to single out his friend who was no longer with us.
I’m grateful for all of you below the heavens, and one incredible friend above.
The crowd in Raleigh, North Carolina joined in, chanting Brodie Lee’s name. The former WWE and AEW star passed away tragically in December 2020, aged just 41.
This is not the first time Big E has paid tribute to Lee. Along with The New Day, the trio wore commemorative gear at the 2021 Royal Rumble, which was later auctioned off and raised thousands of dollars for a charity in Lee’s hometown of Rochester, New York.
