Former WCW star Konnan has weighed in on CM Punk in AEW, claiming that the former WWE Champion wrestling young prospects is not what fans want.
When CM Punk returned to wrestling after a seven-year hiatus at AEW Rampage: The First Dance in his hometown of Chicago, he shocked the wrestling world. Punk has faced former TNT Champion Darby Allin at All Out since his return, and in his first free-to-air TV match since defeating Billy Gunn in 2014, he defeated Team Taz’s Powerhouse Hobbs.
According to Lucha legend Konnan, who spoke on his Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Punk should face more prominent opponents:
“It’s his idea to wrestle these young cats. Most of the fans don’t wanna see that right now. So, of course, I don’t know what his ratings actually are, but if they are not that good, of course, they’re not that good because he ain’t doing anything dope. He ain’t going out there cutting fire promos.”
“The feel good period is over dude, let’s get to the business, but he wants to wrestle Hobbs and all these young guys and give him a chance because he wasn’t given a chance. We weren’t given a chance. Bro, you can do that later. But maybe Tony’s the one that’s like, hey, I want you to wrestle this guy, and Punk’s like no, I want to wrestle the young guys.”
Bryan Danielson and Adam Cole both made their debuts for the company at the end of All Out where Punk returned to the ring. Cole returned to The Elite with The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega, while Danielson set his sights on facing the AEW World Champion Omega. Omega faced Danielson one-on-one at AEW Grand Slam in one of the most high-profile matches in recent years, which ended in a thirty-minute draw.
