5 Key Moments From WWE SmackDown (September 24, 2021)

The go-home show of WWE SmackDown before Extreme Rules took place at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On the show we saw Zelina Vega beat Liv Morgan, Seth Rollins carry on his obsession with Edge, and interestingly Dominik Mysterio got some advice from Sami Zayn. But also…

Belair gave Lynch the Kiss of Death

On the opening segment of SmackDown, Becky Lynch came to the ring to gloat about her recent achievements. She talked about having a baby, winning the SmackDown Women’s title in record time and how she didn’t want to embarrass Bianca Belair on the previous week’s show. This brought out Belair herself who told The Man that she would be winning the match at Extreme Rules this Sunday to become the new champion. She offered her hand for Lynch to shake but Big Time Becks responded by slapping Bianca which started a brawl between the two. Belair blocked the Man Handled Slam and hit the champion with the Kiss of Death. Bianca left the ring and left Lynch seething.

Nakamura defended against Crews

Apollo Crews finally got the rematch he had been asking for this week when he went one-on-one with the Intercontinental Champion, Shinsuke Nakamura. As always, Rick Boogs had the back of Nakamura and Commander Azeez was in the corner of Crews. Towards the end of the match Azeez received a kick from Nakamura as he was checking on Apollo, and when he looked as though he was going to retaliate Boogs impressed by hitting the Commander with an Exploder Suplex. The King of Strong Style jumped back in the ring and turned an Arm Bar attempting in to a winning pin and retained the title.

New title contenders stepped up

For the second time this week, Nikki A.S.H. pinned Natalya, again with a roll-up. After the match the team of Shotzi and Nox turned up in the T.C.B. tank and fired a shot at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Nikki and Rhea Ripley, seemingly putting the champs on notice.

Naomi was escorted away

Naomi hasn’t had much luck lately. She keeps trying to get a match on SmackDown but each week she’s been overlooked by Sonya Deville. This even led to Naomi receiving a fine last week for her “insubordination” towards Deville. It didn’t stop her trying again this week as she came to the ring and issued an open challenge to anyone to come “feel the glow.” Deville was the one that answered but not in the way Naomi wanted. Deville came out to the ring and told Naomi it wasn’t going to happen because it was her that made the matches. Naomi said “how about you make a match between me and you?” and Sonya told her she would smack the glow off of her face, but she’s no longer a competitor, she’s Naomi’s boss and a WWE official. As Naomi tried to get the crowd on her side Deville had the mic cut and then got security to escort Naomi away from the ring.

Reigns wanted to teach Ford a lesson, got one of his own

Following on from Montez Ford’s comments earlier in the night (specifically, calling a certain faction “Bloodline Bitches”), Universal Champion Roman Reigns demanded a match against the Street Profit. During the match Ford got a couple of close pinfall attempts on Reigns, but ultimately came up short and had to tap out to the Guillotine to give the win by submission to the Tribal Chief. After the bell Paul Heyman told Reigns to show Ford what happened when he goes extreme. Jimmy and Jey Uso ran to the ring and joined in on the beatdown of Montez. After Ford had been put through a table the lights went off. When they came back on ‘The Demon’ Finn Balor was on the top turnbuckle and he attacked all three members of the Bloodline, taking them all out in quick succession. Balor stood over Reigns as SmackDown went off the air.
