The first SmackDown since SummerSlam took place at the Simmons Bank Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Kevin Owens was on commentary due to Pat McAfee recovering at home from COVID, both Edge and Seth Rollins announced title aspirations, and Cesaro was demolished by the Alpha Academy. But also:
1. The Man won’t come around
Becky Lynch returned to SmackDown this week and was completely unapologetic about how she won the Women’s Title at SummerSlam, which brought out Bianca Belair with a rematch challenge. Zelina Vega came out next and told Belair to get to the back of the line. Carmella also joined the fray, demanding a match. Finally Liv Morgan arrived and told Carmella and Zelina they shouldn’t be here because they get beaten week after week after week after week. Belair laid the challenge down once again to Lynch but the Man replied with a “Nah” and left the ring.
2. Belair makes it official
Bianca Belair, Zelina Vega, Carmella, and Liv Morgan brawled in the ring after Becky Lynch rebuffed all of their challenges, which resulted in a Fatal Four-Way Elimination Match to name a number one contender. Vega was the first eliminated, falling to a Kiss Of Death from Belair. Carmella followed soon after, with Liv getting the pin. Bianca dropped Morgan face first in to the turnbuckle twice and then hit the KOD to get the win and become the number one contender for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Baron Happy Corbin wants that contract
Introduced as Happy Corbin, the former Baron Corbin made his way to the ring (with a stylish hat on his head) and announced how his luck changed in Vegas. He told the fans that he was the Mayor of Jackpot City and wanted to bring out Big E to make things square for stealing the Money in the Bank briefcase. Happy offered to buy the briefcase from Big E, offering $20,000, then $50,000 and finally $100,000. Big E counters with an offer of selling an Arkansas Razorback plushie. He then tells Corbin that if he doesn’t leave the ring he’ll slap the smile off of his face. Happy takes the hint and leaves.
4. Mysteri-oh no
Rey Mysterio told Dominik that he’ll always have his back, but his son needs to fly on his own. As such he’d arranged a match against a mystery opponent that turned out to be Sami Zayn. Zayn came out on top after hitting Domink with a Helluva Kick to get the win, and afterwards Rey got in the ring to console his son. A seething Dominik pushed Rey away and left the ring, followed up the ramp by his father trying to talk him back down.
5. Balor crashed the Family Celebration
WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, SmackDown Tag Team Champions Jimmy and Jey Uso, and Paul Heyman all made their way to the ring for a Family Celebration which Heyman announced as “where we all get to celebrate the fact that we have Cena-nuff of John Cena.” He tries to keep talking but is interrupted by the music of, and subsequent arrival of, Finn Balor. Balor challenged Reigns to a title match on next week’s SmackDown then attacked the champion. He was triple teamed when the Usos joined in but the Street Profits ran down and made the save. Reigns left the ring as Balor, Ford and Dawkins beat down the Usos to end the show.
